Comics
In all honesty, Comics is a little awkward compared to using an iPad, but you will not find a better comics experience on an iPhone. The application is free, as are dozens of downloadable comics - and once you run out of them, many more are available for purchase. Reading works on a frame-by-frame automated 'zoom', and is surprisingly useful.

Wikipanion
The Wikipedia website works fine on iPhones, but a dedicated app is a better bet. Wikipanion is a free program that gives you quick access to sections of articles, article search, viewing options, bookmarking, and the ability to tweet about the strange fact that just unearthed. Also, wonderfully, there are no listings.
Evernote
Customers access the popular Evernote service for storing notes and ideas online are available for many platforms means we expect a ZX Spectrum app to be announced tomorrow. On the iPhone, Evernote is efficient and usable, enabling you to rapidly scan your notes and also create new ones.
Kindle
With iBooks on the iPhone, you may wonder why you should bother with Amazon's Kindle. After all, the application is not as pretty as iBooks, nor is there an integrated store (you buy in Safari and sync purchases to the app). However, Kindle offers a large selection of books compared to Apple applications and the reading experience is great.

Around Me
Around Me figures out where you are and lists local stuff - banks, bars, petrol stations and, er, Apple Retail Stores. The dependence of the Google Maps app on information means that there are gaps, but it is nevertheless useful to have installed when in unfamiliar surroundings, and landscape mode 'augmented reality' is funny, if flaky.
Air Video Free
Air Video Free can stream (and convert as necessary) video from any computer running the free Air Video Server. You get access to only a small number of items per folder or playlist, but some careful planning can get around this limitation.
Adobe Photoshop Express
If you're looking for Photoshop-style power, Photoshop Express will not impress. However, if you are looking for a quick, free, easy to use tool for making edits to your iPhone photos, Adobe's app is ideal. Use it to crop, straighten, exposure adjustments, color effects, sharpening and more.

Dictionary.com - Dictionary & Thesaurus
More than two million definitions, synonyms and antonyms are available in the palm of your hand with this, off-line dictionary and thesaurus free. The application is fast and efficient, includes phonetic and audio pronunciation of words, and its interface seems perfectly suited to the iPhone.

iHandy Level Free
One of the tools in the toolkit implementation excellent iHandy Carpenter, iHandy Level Free turns your iPhone into a spirit level. By default, it will show how wonky device accelerometer is, but tap the calibration and accurate and great looking level is obtained.

iBooks
Effectively iTunes for books, the app combines a reader and store, typically usable and integrated Apple way. Usefully, iBooks includes PDF support and bookmarks automatically sync across devices.
PCalc Lite
"But I already got a calculator on my device," you might argue. True, but we'd recommend Apple hide application by default in a folder and replacing PCalc Lite. The reason: this is definitely the best free calculator for iOS, with a great interface and lots of options. You can also bolt-on features from the paid version via in-app purchases.
The service formerly known as Read It Later allows you to save pages of websites to read later, deprived of advertising and other junk on the original page. The service is free, as is the application of pocket, it downloads your items, so you can digest without an Internet connection.

Tumblr
Tumblr has carved itself a niche, sitting somewhere between blogs and Twitter. The iPhone app is very nice, providing a smart navigation experience as well as a direct means to upload text, pictures and videos to your Tumblr account.
eBay
Using the eBay app, there's a good chance you will not get closer to the new website eBay. The application is fast, has great saved searches (the flag of the new findings), and allows you to create ads. The latter of those things is also improved by scanning integrated barcode.

Google Earth
"Hold the world in the palm of your hand," says Google about Google Earth, allowing you to fly around the planet by swiping your finger. More integration with content and features from Maps would be good, but Wikipedia articles in Google Earth and Panoramio layer at least ensure it's a great app to see the world from your living room.
Tube Map London
In its most basic form, is a London Tube Map London Underground map on the device, for free. In the landscape, even the ads get out of the way, which is quite nice. And if you have an Internet connection, the application also provides information on board alive, a station finder and calculator route.

XE Currency
XE Currency is a fine example of an application that does what it must, without delay. Configure a list of currencies and conversion rates current shows. Double-tap a currency to set its base rate or to define values for custom conversions.
Bump
Once a contender for the 'surely, that's witchcraft? award, Bump enables you to select up to four contacts, then 'bump' your device into another iOS device running Bump to transfer details, or to compare contacts. Its thunder stolen somewhat by airdrop from Apple, but it will take time before that technology is everywhere in iOS.
Shazam
Shazam is an app that feels like magic when you first use. It's deceptively simple to keep your iPhone near a music source, and wait for the app listens and tells you what song is playing. But the sheer technology behind this simplicity is mind-boggling, and while Shazam does not always get it right, worth a download.

TonePad
Virtual pianos and guitars are very well, but purely digital musical toys are more suited to Apple handhelds. Tonepad is the best of them, using a web-based that allows you to turn notes on and off and compose pleasing and harmonious loops interface; your creations can be edited, saved and loaded to share with other users.
National Rail Enquiries
For anyone commuting by train, National Rail Enquiries is a very useful application you installed. There journey planning, timetables and a choice of location awareness 'next train home' along with tracking progress, so you can see when the probability of a train appear. Not as useful nor as pretty as UK Train Times, but it is quite similar - five quid cheaper.

LinkedIn Pulse
RSS has a reputation for being a rather dry technology, feeding boring lists of headlines. Pulse RSS flips on its head, providing feed streams engage them with photographs. It is perhaps for the public RSS hardcore, but if you follow a small number of foods, which is a great choice.
Photosynth
We did a bit of a double-take to see the Microsoft name attached to this, not least because of the lack of a price tag. But Photosynth panorama is a very good application; is easy to use and fun to use, especially when you see your panoramas take shape as catching them. (The camera app iOS also has a panorama mode, but Photosynth more flexible and will work with older devices.)
